Appalachian Children’s Health Initiative Completes 29-Clinic Expansion
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and the Ohio Department of Development this week announced the completion of the Appalachian Children’s Health Initiative, which invested more than $64 million to establish 29 health clinics across the region.
Most of the clinics are school-based and operate in partnership with 16 health care providers and 34 school districts, offering services including primary, dental, vision and mental health care. Since the first clinic opened in 2024, the clinics have provided nearly 33,000 patient visits, including more than 21,000 visits for children.
The program estimates students have saved an average of 3.19 hours of learning time by receiving care at school rather than leaving campus. The initiative was funded through the Appalachian Community Grant Program and led by the Appalachian Children Coalition with support from OHA member Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the Governor’s Office of Appalachia.
