AHA Advisor Examines Growing Cyber Threats Facing Health Care
The American Hospital Association this week shared a Think Global Health article by John Riggi, AHA national adviser for cybersecurity and risk, highlighting the growing threat cyberattacks pose to U.S. health care amid Cybersecurity Awareness Month.
Riggi wrote that health care has become a preferred target for cybercriminals and foreign adversaries because hospitals increasingly rely on interconnected technology and hold valuable patient data.
The article notes cyberattacks can extend beyond data theft, potentially disrupting clinical operations, delaying care and creating a “ransomware blast radius” that affects other hospitals in a region. Riggi also called for stronger federal action against foreign cyber threats while urging hospitals to strengthen clinical continuity plans and expand collaboration with government and industry partners.
He emphasized that cybersecurity should be treated as a patient safety and enterprise risk issue, not solely an information technology concern.
