October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of early detection and access to cancer screenings. The Ohio Department of Health’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Project, or BCCP, helps women navigate the health care system and access screening services.

BCCP’s Patient Navigation Program connects women with health care providers and community resources and answers questions about scheduling appointments, insurance coverage and other barriers to care. The program also offers no-cost breast and cervical cancer screenings and diagnostic testing to eligible participants.

Most insurance plans cover recommended cancer screenings at no cost, but programs such as BCCP can help women who are uninsured or otherwise qualify for assistance access these services. Early detection can improve treatment outcomes for both breast and cervical cancers.
