Ohio Hospitals Employ 362,000 Ohioans, $105.6 Billion Economic Impact

Ohio hospitals are economic anchors in their communities providing health care services and programs. Hospital care is provided through dedicated caregivers and is supported through partnerships and community services. OHA’s 252 member hospitals directly employed over 362,000 Ohioans at the end of 2025 and contributed more than $105.6 billion in annual statewide economic impact. Nationally, hospitals directly employ 6.6 million people and fuel $4.8 trillion in total economic activity according to the American Hospital Association.

The goods and services hospitals purchase from other businesses create additional economic value for the community, including:

  • Each hospital job supports approximately two additional jobs in the broader economy.
  • Every dollar a hospital spends generates about $2.30 in additional business activity.
  • Hospitals help support roughly one in six jobs while purchasing more than $1.3 trillion in goods and services from other businesses.

Health Care Affordability Hits 5-Year Low, New Survey Finds

A new national survey shows fewer than half of U.S. adults can consistently afford health care, underscoring growing financial pressures on patients and providers alike. The latest West Health-Gallup Healthcare Affordability Index found just 49% of Americans are considered “cost secure,” marking the lowest level in five years. Researchers estimate 2.8 million more adults reported being unable to afford care in 2025 compared with the previous year.
