OHA Celebrates Ohio Nurses During National Nurses Week

OHA is celebrating nurses across the state for the incredible care they provide every day during National Nurses Week, May 6-12. Nurses are the heart of health care, offering compassion, dedication and expertise in every setting. OHA honors their vital contributions and thanks them for their unwavering commitment to patients and communities around Ohio and beyond.

OHA encourages members to leverage AHA’s digital toolkit, social media assets and storytelling platform to showcase their team’s contributions. Hospitals can also participate by using the hashtag #WeAreHealthCare and sharing photos, videos and testimonials. OHA Members Receive Grants to Implement Initiative to Reduce Infant Mortality

Gov. Mike DeWine announced Wednesday an initiative aimed at helping even more babies reach their first birthday. The state’s Partner for Change initiative will provide grants to nonprofit organizations across the state to replicate a Cincinnati-based model for reducing infant deaths in four targeted counties. Grant partners selected for the initiative include Dayton Children’s Hospital in Montgomery County. In Lucas County, the partner is the Hospital Council of Northwest Ohio in Toledo and CelebrateOne will coordinate activities in Franklin County. In Cuyahoga County, the state’s partner will be First Year Cleveland. Akron Hospitals Launch Violence Intervention Program at Bedside

Two OHA member hospitals, Summa Health and Cleveland Clinic Akron General, are partnering with the city of Akron to launch a new hospital-based violence intervention program aimed at reducing gun violence and preventing retaliation. A licensed social worker will meet gun violence victims at their bedside, offering long-term support, case management and referrals to resources that address trauma and social determinants of health. Akron City Council has approved initial funding, with a focus on building trust and reducing emergency room recidivism. Read more here.

CDC: Measles Cases Climb to 935 Nationwide, 33 in Ohio

The CDC has confirmed 935 measles cases in 2025 across 30 jurisdictions, with Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma at the outbreak’s epicenter. In Ohio, the count was 33, with cases in Ashtabula County, 14 in Knox County and one each in Allen, Defiance and Holmes counties. The CDC reports: Hospitalizations: 121 people (13%) have been hospitalized, including 30% of children under 5 with the virus. Vaccination status: 96% of cases are unvaccinated or have unknown status.
