AHA Guide Supports Hospital Preparedness for Mass Violence
The American Hospital Association has released a new resource to help hospitals and health systems prepare for and respond to mass violence incidents, developed in partnership with the Medical University of South Carolina’s National Mass Violence Center.
The Health Care Leaders’ Guide to Mass Violence Preparedness, Response, Recovery and Mitigation provides evidence-based strategies that hospitals can integrate into existing emergency and disaster management plans. The guide addresses immediate response needs as well as longer-term physical, behavioral and mental health impacts on patients, staff and communities. AHA officials say the resource is designed to strengthen, not replace, current preparedness efforts and support health care leaders before, during and after incidents of mass violence.
