OHA Announces 2025 Sustainability, Energy Cup Award Winners

OHA’s Energy & Sustainability Program this year brought back its Sustainability and Energy Cup awards, and winners of the 2025 honors were announced Friday. This year’s winners include:

The John Chapman Award for Environmental Leadership: The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center for outstanding campus-wide efforts in energy, waste and procurement. Named in honor of Johnny Appleseed, the award recognizes a hospital or health system for excellence in initiating or supporting pollution prevention programs.

Melvin Creeley Awards: Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Henry County Hospital, Wright-Patterson Medical Center, Mount Carmel St. Ann’s Hospital, OhioHealth System and Akron Children’s Hospital for innovative and impactful sustainability improvements. The award recognizes hospitals and health systems that promote sound environmental practices through the implementation of energy efficiency programs, waste reduction strategies, recycling initiatives and other activities to preserve the health of the planet for future generations.

Energy Cup Awards: 32 hospital sites reduced energy use by at least 3% from 2023 to 2024. The following sites saw the largest percentage reduction in the categories of large hospital, small hospital and non-hospital:

  • MetroHealth Medical Center – Main Campus – 14.74% reduction (large hospital winner)
  • Pomerene Hospital – 8.06% reduction (small hospital winner)
  • OSU Wexner Medical Center, 700 Ackerman Road – 20.89% reduction (non-hospital winner)
