Newborns Can be Signed Up to Receive Free Monthly Books Before Leaving the Hospital

With the assistance of the Ohio Department of Health, newborns can be signed up in the hospital by parents or caregivers to receive a free monthly book from Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. This registration will occur while completing the Birth Parent Worksheet for the Certificate of Live Birth.

As of Aug. 6, parents and caregivers who sign up will receive their child’s first book in 8-10 weeks, ensuring their child receives the full collection of 60 free books before entering kindergarten. They will have the option to select between an English collection featuring a few bilingual books or a fully English/Spanish bilingual collection.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of Ohio and its many local partners would like to continue to collaborate with hospitals and birthing centers on how to educate caregivers about the importance of reading to children, especially newborns.

New CDC Campaign Addresses Youth Substance Use, Mental Health

The back-to-school season is a great time to engage with youth about mental health and substance use to promote their well-being throughout the academic year. To support these conversations, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has launched Free Mind, a new national campaign that provides youth ages 12-17 and their parents and caregivers with resources and information about substance use, mental health, and the connection between the two. AHA Launches New Hub on Reducing Disparities in Health Outcomes

The American Hospital Association Aug. 7 launched a new webpage, Reducing Disparities in Health Outcomes, featuring new and familiar resources for members and their communities. As part of a larger strategy to help address health disparities, this page will be a hub for actionable resources and tools to assist hospitals and health systems on their journeys to transform care and improve health outcomes for all.
