A Cleveland Clinic researcher has received a $3.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop a tool that can predict individual outcomes in epilepsy surgery. St. Rita’s Medical Center recently began performing a new heart procedure to help prevent cardiac arrest, the first in the region to do so. The procedure involves inserting a device called an S-ICD, or subcutaneous implantable defibrillator. The device is implanted right above the heart, and, unlike previous technology, never touches the heart, but rather has a chord that goes under and around the heart to shock it out of an irregular beat. Read more 11.28.14

Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers - Bryan Hospital has recently started performing cochlear implant surgery. Previously, patients had to travel outside the area to receive the surgery which bypasses damaged portions of the ear and directly stimulates the auditory nerve with a small complex electronic device that can help provide a sense of sound to a person who is profounding deaf or severly hard-of-hearing. The Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health at Lakewood Hospital is one of seven sites in the United States participating in a clinical trial of the effectiveness of the NeutroAD chair, manufactured by Israel-based Neuronix Ltd.
